Mr Michael J Wearne is a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Oculoplastic Surgeon who has worked full time for East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (ESHT) since March 2000. He is highly experienced in performing routine and complex cataract surgery, including the use of toric, extended depth of focus (EDOF) and multifocal lens implants in selected patients. In addition, Mr Wearne has considerable expertise in eyelid, orbital and lacrimal conditions.
Mr Wearne had a lengthy UK training having initially trained as an Optometrist, gaining a 1st class Honours Degree in Ophthalmic Optics, prior to studying Medicine at Birmingham University. He spent all 6yrs higher surgical training at the world famous Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, finishing at Moorfields by completing a 12 month Fellowship in Oculoplastic and Lacrimal surgery.
Mr Wearne has been Clinical Lead and College Tutor for Ophthalmology at ESHT. He has a Certificate in Medical Education and for many years has had an active teaching role in the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London. He is a Senior Surgical Tutor in the RCOphth Skills Centre and has been an Examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He regularly attends and participates in National and International Ophthalmology Meetings. He has presented widely and has numerous publications in peer review eye journals.
Mr Huw Oliphant is a highly skilled consultant ophthalmic surgeon with a specialisation in oculoplastic surgery. He dedicates his full-time commitment to the Sussex Eye Hospital, Brighton, within the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.
With an extensive background in eye surgery, Mr Oliphant brings forth over a decade of experience, having successfully performed numerous operations. His expertise encompasses a broad spectrum of ophthalmic procedures, ranging from routine to intricate cataract surgeries in his NHS practice, alongside managing complex oculoplastic cases. He has established a regional service tailored to patients who have undergone or require eye removal surgery.
Mr Oliphant’s proficiency in oculoplastic surgery is fortified by his completion of two fellowships, specialising in eyelid, lacrimal, and orbital surgeries, initially at Brighton and subsequently at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.
Specialising in cataract surgery, oculoplastic, lacrimal, and orbital surgeries, Mr Oliphant’s clinical interests also extend to emergency ophthalmology and general ophthalmic care.
Mr Huw Oliphant offers a comprehensive array of treatments and tests, including eyelid cyst removal, uveitis management, ptosis correction, and various oculoplastic procedures. Additionally, he provides services such as YAG Capsulotomy, visual fields assessment, lacrimal surgery, and cataract surgery, among others.
Mrs Cornelia Poitelea is a consultant Ophthalmologist who treats conditions such as cataract and post-cataract conditions, eyelids and lacrimal diseases (including eyelids turning inwards or outwards, skin cancers, watery eyes, droopy eyelids, excess eyelid skin removal) and glaucoma (optic nerve damage due to high pressure in the eye).
Mrs Poitelea completed comprehensive training in Ophthalmology and worked with world-wide known ophthalmologists. She accomplished her specialist ophthalmic training in centres within London and South East. She further pursued advanced training in Oculoplastic and Lacrimal Surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital, followed by a second fellowship at Queen Victoria Hospital.
In 2014 she was appointed as a full-time Consultant Ophthalmologist by the Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust where she is the oculoplastics sub-specialist lead. She is greatly involved in training and mentoring junior ophthalmologists, acting as Educational and Clinical Supervisor for doctors in training following the Curriculum outlined by Royal College of Ophtalmologists.
Felix Saucan completed his nursing degree in 1998, marking the beginning of his journey in the medical field. In 2009, he found his niche in ophthalmology and immediately fell in love with the field. Driven by a desire to enhance his skills and contribute more effectively to his department, Felix pursued additional training opportunities.
His quest for knowledge led him first to Canterbury University, where he underwent anaesthetic training to support anaesthetists in their work. Building upon this foundation, he pursued ophthalmic training at Brighton University, completing a comprehensive curriculum encompassing outpatients, emergency care, and surgical procedures in ophthalmology. Equipped with newfound expertise and confidence, Felix recognised the opportunity to expand his role as a practitioner.
Driven by a commitment to improving patient experiences, Felix sought further training in administering local anaesthetic eye blocks (SubTenon) for individuals undergoing eye surgery. His dedication to ensuring pain-free procedures and optimal outcomes exemplifies his commitment to excellence. As a leader within his team, Felix sets a high standard through his own exemplary performance.
