Lacrimal surgery

Do you feel like your eyes constantly look droopy and tired, even when you’re well-rested? This could be due to excess skin or fat in your upper eyelids, a condition known as dermatochalasis.

What is Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty?

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty, also known as an eyelid lift, is a surgical procedure that addresses drooping or heavy upper eyelids. This can be done for both functional and cosmetic reasons.

Functional: When excess skin (dermatochalasis) hangs over the upper eyelid, it can obstruct vision and create a droopy appearance. Blepharoplasty can improve peripheral vision and make you look more alert.

Cosmetic: Over time, factors like aging, sun damage, and smoking can make your upper eyelids appear tired and heavy. Blepharoplasty can rejuvenate the area, creating a more youthful and refreshed look.

Benefits Of Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty

Heavy eyelids can cause strain on your eyes, leading to headaches and fatigue. Blepharoplasty can alleviate this strain, making you feel more comfortable throughout the day.

This is a key benefit for those with significant drooping eyelids. By removing excess skin that hangs over the lashes, upper eyelid blepharoplasty can improve your upper peripheral vision, allowing you to see better overall.

Drooping eyelids can make you look tired or even angry. Blepharoplasty removes excess skin and fat, creating a more alert and refreshed look to your eyes. This can make you appear younger and more energetic.

Procedure

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under local anaesthesia with sedation. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Consultation

A thorough examination by an experienced oculoplastic surgeon is crucial. They will assess your needs, discuss your goals, and create a personalised surgical plan.

  • The Procedure

Careful markings are made on the eyelid skin. A precise incision is placed within the natural crease of the eyelid, minimising scarring. Excess skin and/or fat are removed through this incision.

  • Recovery

You will receive detailed instructions on post-operative care to minimise swelling and bruising. Most patients see a significant improvement within 2 weeks, with continued improvement over the following weeks.

Why Choose Us

Eyelid Cyst (chalazion)

Chalazia are one of the most frequent benign lumps affecting the upper or lower eyelids. They develop when a meibomian gland, responsible for producing oils that keep your tears lubricated, becomes blocked. This blockage leads to inflammation and sometimes infection.

A chalazion often starts as a visible “white head” on the eyelid margin, progressing into a tender swelling.

Initial treatment typically involves applying warm compresses to the affected area and using topical antibiotic ointment. While this approach can sometimes resolve the swelling, a firm lump might persist. In such cases, outpatient surgical removal under local anesthesia is recommended. The procedure involves removing the chalazion from the inner surface of the eyelid.

Types of Intraocular Lens (IOLs)

Monofocal IOLs

Monofocal IOLs

The traditional choice, providing clear vision at one distance (distance being the most common). You might still need glasses for reading or near work.

Toric IOLs

Toric IOLs

Ideal for those with astigmatism (a common condition causing blurred vision). These IOLs correct astigmatism, potentially reducing your need for glasses after surgery.

Multifocal IOLs

Multifocal IOLs

These IOLs offer clear vision at multiple distances (distance, near, and intermediate) potentially eliminating your need for glasses altogether.
